Web Hosting FAQ

Back to ProperComfy

Do terms and conditions apply?
No, this is a friendly agreement. You may cease to use my services at any time by amending your domain's nameserver configuration. I may terminate your account on the server at any time, without any prior notice. Trust is required from both parties.

Does my site have to meet any requirements?
The site can contain anything, except nasty stuff. This service is probably not suitable for highly visited sites (i.e. hundreds of daily visits). While not compulsory, a discreet link back to ProperComfy would be friendly.

Performance specs?
Your site will be hosted as a virtual server on a linux box. The connection is a standard UK broadband link.

Bandwidth limit?
I will politely ask bandwidth hogs to find another host, but I can't give you a numeric limit. If bandwidth is a huge issue to you, perhaps you should look for a more powerful hosting solution.

How can you afford to offer this service?
Well, it doesn't cost any more on top of the broadband link, which I would have anyway. I have a job (Steria!)and therefore am not relying on this for income. I am, however, giving you lots of my precious time, so any donations would be nice gestures.

Why offer this service?
A few reasons. I am assessing whether it is viable for me to run this as a business in the future. I'm quite keen on building a friendly little community and getting some contacts (i.e. people who owe me favours) in various industries. Lastly, sadly enough, I enjoy it.

Pay in the future?
In the future I may upgrade my hosting hardware and start to charge for the service. However, if you start free, you will stay free.

Must I make donations?
Those who make kind (and much appreciated) donations may be given a higher priority on some aspects of the service. If you persist in being downright ungrateful, I'll give you a friendly warning, before booting you out the door.

Support? Web-based configuration utility?
Just me via email at the moment. I've just graduated with a degree in Computer Science, so I should be able to answer most of your queries and I will endeavour to do so promptly.

If I agree to the offer, what's the procedure?
If you have your own domain name and want to use it, it'll go like this:
  1. I'll set up some DNS records for your domain and then I'll get back to you with two nameserver addresses.
  2. You will then have to contact the company (or you may have access to a web-based configuration utility) with whom you registered the domain, and you ask them to set the domain to use these two nameservers.
  3. Then I'll create an FTP account on the server for you to upload your files to.
  4. Then I'll give you the FTP hostname, username and password required to log in.
And bingo, you should be ready to rock.

If you would like a blahblah.propercomfy.co.uk:
  1. I'll create an FTP account on the server for you to upload your files to.
  2. Then I'll give you the FTP hostname, username and password required to log in.
And bingo, you should be ready to rock.
